Hardware Setup - Deck Cable, Winch, Array

Running the Deck Cable

The path the deck cable runs may very depending on the vessel and hardware setup, however the principles remain applicable

The deck cable will need to be run with the components end running into the e-lab/dry lab to connect to the ARS, while the male connector end runs to the winch to connect to the tow cable. Check with FPC and deck crew to confirm a safe path prior to running cable.

A couple general rules include:

  • Run the component end into the e-lab/dry lab first, leaving enough cable to comfortably connect to the ARS with extra for adjustment if needed

  • When running cable along the deck, it is best practice to run on the outside of railings and poles to avoid trip hazards, do not run across busy passageways or deck space without a cable cover. Avoid any pinch points such as doors hinges, tight corners, or crane junctions

  • Secure the cable gently but securely with zip ties, allowing for natural movement with ship movement

  • Leave plenty of cable on the back deck to comfortably connect to the tow cable, locate a safe space to store connector end when not in use

Winch Setup and Tow Cable Spooling

  • If the winch is not permanently fixed on the back deck of the vessel, coorindate with the FPC and deck crew to have it installed prior to each cruise/field season

  • In the event the tow cable needs spooled …. Annamaria here

Array Setup

Only install the array 1-2 days before sailing to prevent unnecessary sun exposure

  • Prior to connecting array, check for air bubbles - if found hang from an upper deck and top up oil

  • When ready, remove end-caps from each end and secure together for safe storage

  • Ensure all o-rings and pins/connections are clean, service if needed link to array care

  • Connect the top of the array to the end of the tow cable securely, wrap connection in Christy plumbers tape or self-amalgamating tape to ensure watertight hold (allow tape to sit outside for ~30 mins to acclimate to temperature prior to application)

  • Secure tail line to end of the end array and secure on winch for sailing

Deck Test

Consider a final tap test once the hardware and e-lab are setup to ensure all equipment are working properly prior to sailing
