Why
Purpose of this guidebook
We developed this guidebook for multiple reasons.
First, we hope that gathering important project-related information into one place will facilitate your onboarding, independence, and integration into the group. It will also act as a resource to turn to if you find yourself unsure about anything related to the team: how it functions, its origin story, etc.
Secondly, we hope that publishing this resource will increase the reproducibility of our project and decrease loss of institutional knowledge, especially since the Workflows project’s core members are contractors.
Project vision
We have several goals outlined for the Workflows project.
High-level, conceptual goals
Initial project planning established that a broad goal of the Workflows project was to capitalize upon recent advances in technology and improve overall assessment processes. In alignment with the 2018 Next Generation Stock Assessment Improvement Plan, our project aims to improve three of the “4Ts” of a timely, efficient, and effective stock assessment enterprise: throughput (the number of assessments that can be produced); timeliness (the speed of assessment processes and assessment product delivery), and transparency (the accessibility of assessment results). Adoption of the project’s products is also expected to improve service and trust with NSAP partners and stakeholders.
In parallel with these goals, we expect the workflow to decrease the amount of time and effort spent completing tasks manually, when they could be completed in a semi-automated fashion. This outcome should increase reproducibility and transparency in stock assessment workflows, in alignment of the NOAA Fisheries Open Science initiative.
Specific goals
To accomplish those high-level goals, we are focused on achieving the following objectives:
Developing a workflow based on two R packages that create stock assessment templates and plots
Facilitating workflow adoption by engaging in various teaching opportunities (workshops, office hours, etc.)
History behind the workflows project
The stock assessment community within NOAA recognized a need for projects focused on streamlining data workflows into assessments, assessment document production, and assessment file storage. These topics were recognized by assessment scientists across all regions as areas with large capacity for efficiency improvements, and were prioritized to improve stock assessment timeliness and throughput. The IRA-funded work on this theme complemented planned projects in FY24 by the National Stock Assessment Program focused on automating data processing and tool development that would support workflow automation. Ultimately, improvements to assessment workflows are expected to increase transparency and reproducibility of NMFS’ assessment science and enhance open science initiatives.
A steering committee was created to guide the project. The committee was comprised of regional experts representing each Science Center and OST who had experience with workflow and reproducibility projects.
